Vocabulary
- ISP
- Internet Service Provider. They provide the cable that runs into your house that allows you to access the Internet and usually you need to pay them for it.
- IP address
- This is the number that is assigned to your machine by your ISP.
- MAC address
- This is the number that is assigned to your computer by the company that made it. It is also known as a physical address.
- Octet
- A group of 8 binary digits. In MAC and IP addresses they are usually separated by periods, colons, or dashes.
- Node
- Any piece of electronic equipment hooked up to a network. This includes, but is not limited to, your computer, printer, PDA, router, and any other computers on the network.
- Binary (Base-2)
- Hexadecimal (Base-16)
- Decimal (Base-10)
- Network Class
- Host Computer (or Client)
