How to Use the Greenland Space Science Symposium Materials

Do your students see themselves as scientists? Do they understand "real-world" connections to what they learn in classes? One of our daily challenges, as educators, is to help students model the curiosity and inquisitive nature of scientists.

The Greenland Space Science Symposium materials help you "link" your students to current research and an international group of space scientists. The lesson plan builds upon interviews with scientists as primary sources. While viewing the interview videos, students "connect" with space scientists to learn not only science, but to hear, from scientists, what it takes to be a scientist. Internet websites, vodcasts and podcasts expand and deepen the study of space weather, helping students understand the symbiotic relationship between the Sun and Earth. Many of the linked resources take you to educational materials developed by NASA to help educators stay in-tune with Earth and space science discoveries.

These educational resources also encourage written and oral communication through the web blogs. The original questions posed to the scientists were gathered from students, via daily emails.

Please use these resources to inspire and excite your students. And ... as you adjust and modify these plans, please consider sharing your own lesson plans and student work via the lesson plan builder and student corner.

How to Create Your OWN Materials like these

The materials created in Greenland offer a fabulous collection of visual, audio and print information. Through videos, interviews and blogs an excitement and drive to learn is captured and presented. It may seem like a far-fetched idea to you right now, but you CAN create materials of this caliber on your own. Really. All you need is an idea and the right information to get started.

Ideas to help get started:
If you're a science teacher, consider using the materials presented through the blog and the videos as the start of some scientific experiments in your classroom. Take the excitement of the Greenland materials and run with some of your own lessons. Check out the PDF file attached to the bottom of this page to learn how to enhance your scientific experiments with images. Or try the Virtual Science Fair Lesson Plan as a starting point to your own high-tech, high-energy web site.

But these ideas stretch way beyond just a science classroom. Think BIG! You can use the same Nortel LearniT materials to document events at your school, highlight group activities, capture interviews and more. Check out the Video Production materials to learn how.

Why not showcase your students' work? Follow along with the Digital Portfolio lesson plan and the Web Content Creation materials to learn how.
