Introduction

This plan is being developed to enhance the way a group of prospective early childhood teachers (and other pre-service teachers) are prepared to write lesson plans.

It is based on the 6ES model http://nortellearnit.org/Learn_more_about_using_our_lesson_plans/ developed by Nortel LearniT.  This plan incorporates technology as an integral part of the lesson presentation.

Project

Goal:  Students will come to appreciate the value of lesson planning.

Behavioral Objectives:  At the end of this lesson students will be able to use the 6ES (http://nortellearnit.org/Learn_more_about_using_our_lesson_plans/model) to develop a lesson plan that they will use in their field placement setting.

Procedures and Time Allotted will be incorporated in the lesson plans as will the 6ES elements described below.  It is important to also include the lesson plan developer's (your) name, and also the Title, Subject Area(s), Grade Level(s), Time Management Tips, and Technology Skills Integrated (Digital Ethics, Discovering the Internet, Imaging, Online Safety, Animoto/PowerPoint, Video Production, Web Page Creation) and Standards (optional provision, if known).

Engage

As, an example, to engage the prospective teachers in the lesson planning project show an original video depicting a teacher working with a group of children – once with a plan and once without a plan.  The video may be in the form of a cartoon and will include music.

Explore

To engage students in exploration of lesson plan strategies have them do an advanced Internet search to find one site which contains useful lesson planning strategies.  Ask the students to analyze the plan according to the 6ES format.

Explain

To encourage students to explain their understanding of each of the 6ES have the students work in pairs.  Set up a class wiki on which students share their explanations of the 6ES  in a given plan.

Elaborate

To allow the students opportunity to elaborate on their understanding of each of the steps in lesson planning ask each student to develop a plan according to the 6ES model and request that they post the plan on the class web site.

Evaluate

To evaluate students’ mastery of this lesson planning process have the students work in pairs to critique a plan provided by the teacher.  Students will use a wiki for this collaborative activity.

Extend

To encourage students to share their understanding of lesson planning techniques assign them to prepare a technologized presentation for other members of the Education Department and their students.
